Being the gateway
to the Ocala National Forest has its fringe benefits. Close
access to the beautiful Alexander Springs Recreation Area
is just one. Noted among Florida's 27 first magnitude freshwater
springs, the Alexander Springs beach is one of the clearest
swimming spots in the state.
Combined with
the surrounding subtropical vegetation of palms, hardwood
swamp and sand pine ridge, this is a relaxing repose from
the concrete jungles to the South. Horseback riding is
another benefit. Riders enjoy the many trails available
in the Ocala National Forest while Umatilla's surrounding
countryside offers acreage for large tracts for the horse
hobbyist, many including lakefront access.
Umatilla is also
the home of the Seminole Ranger District office. Located
on State Road 19, this center provides the visitor with
maps and information on camping, canoeing, trail riding,
nature walks and many other National Forest Park activities.
